When choosing a model for your needs, you will need to consider the following factors - we recommend you also read our "How to buy the right paper shredder" article.

Security Level

Cross Cut

Cross cut provide better security by cutting the paper vertically and horizontally into confetti like pieces. Shred sizes vary depending on the model and class of security required. Waste is very compact and does not have to be emptied as frequently. Cross cut models generally require that you use specially formulated oil to lubricate, clean and clear the cutting cylinders. Under normal use, oiling once a week is sufficient. Under high volume use - oiling hourly is recommended.

Strip Cut

Strip cut models are for lower security and are also known as straight-cut or spaghetti cut. They slice paper into long strips which can vary in width depending on the model. The most common shred sizes are 1/8 and 1/2. Strip cuts can handle higher volume and require less maintenance. However, because strips are not easily compressed, waste takes up a higher volume and needs to be emptied more frequently.

Throat Size

Throat size is the opening where paper or documents are inserted into the unit, usually located at the top of any model. Most units come with a 9" wide throat, but some models have larger throat sizes to accommodate larger width documents. Some models may also have a separate throat to for inserting multimedia such as CD's, DVD's or credit cards.

Personal, Deskside and Home office or General office

Smaller shredders can be used for home office, personal and deskside shredding for lower volumes. Generally these units have small waste capacity and a small throat size. They also accept stacks of documents from 1 to 8 sheets at a time. Some higher end models can shred staples and paper clips. These units can fit under or beside the desk with-out taking up too much room.

Central office and High Volume / Capacity

Central office models will have a larger capacity and are designed to accommodate larger stacks of paper. They are used in medium to large offices where work groups need to access the shredder regularly. These models are designed to shred different volumes from low, medium to high volume through-out the day. They can generally accept stacks from 5 all the way up to 20+ pages at a time. These models can also come with automatic oilers to extend the life of the cutting cylinders with high volume use.

Features

Most models come with an automatic start and stop when paper is inserted into the feed opening. Some models provide jam detection and reverse to clear the shredder in the event of paper jam. Most units will also have a waste paper full which stops further shredding until the waste basket is emptied. Some models will have shelfs built onto the front to stack paper while working. Most models will also have safety features such as door ajar and overload sensors which stop the paper shredder from working until the issue is resolved.
